Religious Trauma Therapies

Imagine a life where you can make choices according to your own values and beliefs, without the constant shadow of religious guilt or fear.

From my lived experience of religious trauma after leaving Islam, I know firsthand the emotions and challenges that it can prevent. I use a range of therapies to help you navigate the difficult times and give you coping techniques which you can use to move forward.

I use three therapies in my sessions:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • CBT helps us to understand the links between how the way that we think about situations can cause to us to react to situations. Our thoughts and reactions can bring on emotions such as guilt, low mood, anxiety or any other emotion.
  • We take time to understand your belief system. This includes where your belief system comes from, which may include childhood experiences and/or religious teachings.
  • For any beliefs that you identify as being unhelpful or stopping you from the living the life you want to live, we will use techniques which are designed to help you change your beliefs, challenge your thoughts and rewire the way you think.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy

  • ACT is particularly helpful when it comes to situations that are beyond our control.
  • Not all thoughts and emotions that we have can, or should be changed – but that doesn’t make them any easier to live with.
  • ACT helps us to consider what is important to us, and helps us live by these standards regardless of any painful emotions or thoughts that show up. It helps us to manage these painful emotions, whilst we move towards the life we want to live.
  • ACT is particularly useful when it comes to religious indifference or toxic family/community members.

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)

  • I use CFT to support people experiencing shame, self-criticism, or low self-worth.
  • These feelings can be linked to earlier life experiences or religious teachings
  • CFT aims to reduce self-critical thoughts and teach your how to be kinder to yourself.
  • Think about how you speak to a friend; probably with kindness and compassion. But the way you speak to yourself is probably very different. CFT helps you to learn how to give yourself the same kindness and compassion that you give friends and loved ones.
