You’ve been raised in a high-control or fundamentalist religion.

You were taught fear-based beliefs (e.g. the threat of going to hell, divine punishment, original sin, bringing shame on yourself or onto your family)

You were not allowed to engage with people outside of yourreligion /community.

You’ve were raised to feel guilt, fear, or unworthiness when not acting in accordance with your religious beliefs

You were harmed by purity culture, anti-LGBTQ+ teachings, or religious-based coercion

What to Expect from Therapy

Therapy can help you make sense of what you have learned in the past and how it has affected you. It can also support you to make decisions about what you believe in and what kind of person you want to be, and to live freely on your own terms. If you decide to have therapy with After Faith, this is what you should expect:

A safe, non-judgemental and confidential space where you can openly discuss anything – the doubts, the fears, the anger, the relief.

Therapy from someone who understands the dynamics of high-control groups, faith deconstruction, and the psychological impact of leaving faith.

Learn practical techniques based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) to challenge unhelpful thought patterns and manage difficult emotions.

Explore your values, interests, and aspirations outside the confines of religious doctrine, and develop a stronger sense of self and increased self-esteem.

Understanding the “Why”: Gain insight into how past experiences and teachings shaped your current fears and anxieties and learn how to break free from them.

Some types of Counselling might have a more passive approach, you might have experienced this in the past where you talk and talk, with little input from your counsellor. This is not what you will experience with me as your therapist. We will work together. I am there to listen to you and guide you towards the steps that will help you make necessary changes. I hope that by the end of therapy you will have developed skills that allow you to become your own ‘therapist’ even after therapy ends, this is essential because healing from religious trauma doesn’t have an end, it is something we often have to keep working on.

Whilst I have gone through my own journey with loss of faith and healing from religious trauma, I don’t have all the answers. There is no guide to leaving religion, or healing from religious trauma, but I can help guide you towards figuring out what you want to do. I am there to help you get to the next stage in your journey, whatever that may be.
